Five Akosombo Units Back Online

Ghana’s power recovery efforts have made strong progress, with five out of six units at the Akosombo Hydroelectric Plant now fully operational and supplying electricity to the national grid. Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor confirmed the successful commissioning of the fifth unit, noting that it was brought online smoothly through effective coordination among engineers and technical teams. The progress follows a recent fire outbreak that damaged the plant’s substation control room, disrupting power distribution and causing outages across parts of Accra, Ashanti, Central, and Tema. With most units now restored, officials say the grid has reached a key stage in its recovery. The added capacity is already helping to stabilise electricity supply and reduce outages in affected areas. Work is ongoing to restore the final unit, with authorities confident the plant will return to full capacity by the end of the week.
